About the Upper Valley Haven

Since 1980, the Haven has provided temporary shelter and educational programming for homeless families and adults, as well as food to anyone in need. The Haven offers support and fosters independence through four domains of service: Food, Shelter, Education, and Problem Solving. The Haven is open 365 days per year and never charges for any of its services. We serve over 14,500 people per year.

Overview 

The Upper Valley Haven is seeking a shelter staff member for our Hixon Adult Shelter. The shelter operates 24/7 and accommodates up to 20 individuals. Shelter staff assist guests and visitors, facilitate daily operations, and ensure the environment is safe, clean, and welcoming. They are able to build positive and supportive relationships and are respectful and accepting of people facing challenges in their lives. Reliability and punctuality are vitally important to ensure the smooth operation of the shelter.

Benefits

We invest in the growth and development of our staff with a role-based, funded learning and development plan. Compensation  

The pay rate for this position is $19 per hour.

Schedule: Saturday, Sunday, and Monday 2nd shift 4:00 pm – 12:30 am (24 hours per week).

Requirements

Critical to the success of this position are:

Overview 

We are seeking per diem shelter staff to cover for our regular staff during first, second, and third shifts all days of the week. Shelter staff assist guests and visitors, facilitate daily operations, and ensure the environment is safe, clean, and welcoming. They are responsible for completing shelter management activities such as meal preparation, laundry and preparation of rooms for guests as examples. They are able to build positive and supportive relationships are respectful and and accepting of people facing challenges in their lives. Reliability and punctuality are vitally important to ensure the smooth operation of the shelter.

Compensation  

The pay rate is $19/hour for first shift (8:00 am to 4:30 pm) and second shift (4:00 pm to 12:30 am). The pay rate is $20.25/ hour for 3rd shift (12:00 am to 8:30 am).

A second and third shift on call stipend of $175.00 per week is also available.

Requirements

  • Reliably commute or planning to relocate to the area before starting work (Required)

Conditions of employment for per diem shelter staff include:

  • Timely response to email or phone call requests from your supervisor
  • Completing required trainings within 30 days
  • Completing onboarding meetings within 60 days
  • Meeting with your supervisor at least every 60 days
  • Completing at least one shift or sign up for a full week of on-call every 60 days

The Upper Valley Haven is a private nonprofit that provides support and assistance to community members struggling with poverty in Vermont and New Hampshire. We meet people where they are, address immediate needs through food and shelter, and offer longer-term solutions that foster independence and housing stability. Everyone deserves to have their basic needs met and a community is stronger when we offer a hand up to our most vulnerable neighbors.

Overview

As our Director of Shelter & Community Services, reporting to the Executive Director, and as a member of the Upper Valley Haven’s Leadership team, you will have responsibility for all program planning, operations, and staffing of our adult and family shelters, supportive housing services, community outreach services, children’s services and future expansion projects.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and manage a comprehensive array of services and programs such as the haven adult and family shelters, supported housing case management, community outreach, landlord liaison, and after school  and summer children’s programs.
  • Lead three direct reports—Adult Program Manager/Family Program Manager, and Landlord Liaison—and 30 indirect employees.
  • Review services being offered and develop new programs as needs emerge.
  • Be active in advocacy with local and statewide organizations concerned with homelessness and supported housing. Lead our public response to critical issues of concern to our mission.
  • Ensure our services comply with all federal, state, funding, and city regulations, certifications, and grant and licensing requirements.
  • This position requires on-call coverage once every five weeks for after-hour calls from shelter staff for emergency/urgent matters.

Compensation 

This is a full-time opportunity with a flexible hybrid work schedule. The salary range is $80,000 to $95,000 depending on education and experience.

Requirements

Qualified applicants will have:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services or similar degree
  • 10+ years of professional experience in human services, working with the shelter, outreach, or related work
  • Senior leadership experience supervising seasoned staff operating multiple human services programs with fiscal responsibility

Other professional and leadership competencies that are critical to the success of this position are:

  • Strong relationship builder and communicator with experience leading diverse work teams
  • Successful experience in program reporting, measurement, and evaluation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to be detail oriented in all notes and documentation
  • Experience in team building, program development/management, problem-solving, and community building
  • Ability to analyze needs and apply resources effectively to meet those needs
  • Ability to achieve targeted results through motivating, mobilizing, and delegating to others
  • Passionate about the Haven’s mission and able to promote and communicate the mission and values of the Haven to external and internal stakeholders
