45 Years ~ 45 Partners: Vital Communities

Vital Communities is a nonprofit that brings people and organizations together to take on the big challenges facing the Upper Valley, especially for those who are most impacted by these challenges. One of their areas of focus is housing and transportation, including food access, farm viability, and energy efficiency.

The Haven has partnered with Vital Communities in a number of ways over the years. We’ve been part of their Housing Advisory Committee, which focuses on increasing access to affordable, safe, and stable housing. They’ve also been a supportive partner in our shelter work, including efforts around our new Shelter & Resource Center.

Together, we’ve also worked to expand access to transportation. Vital Communities has provided e-bike subsidies for some of our guests, helping them get where they need to go more easily.

“It’s crucial to center safe, affordable, and accessible housing, especially for our unhoused and precariously housed community members,” said Ellen Hender, Housing and Transportation Program Manager at Vital Communities. “We appreciate the Haven being an active partner, and we’re glad we can be a supportive partner of the Haven’s work.”

Many of our staff have also graduated from Leadership Upper Valley, a program that helps people grow their leadership skills, make connections, and learn more about the region. Over 400 members of local businesses and organizations have participated in LUV, and it continues to be a great catalyst for professional, personal, and organizational growth.

We’re thankful for all the ways Vital Communities continues to support our work and the Upper Valley region.
