Dartmouth’s Young African Leaders Initiative

Dartmouth’s Young African Leaders chose to honor Nelson Mandela’s legacy and birthday on July 18th by helping in our Food Shelf and organizing boxes of book donations. The Young Leaders came from various African countries, including Uganda, Rwanda and South Africa, among others. The seven helpers expressed admiration for the Haven’s commitment to our local community, and for the wide scope of our activities. Conversation focused on international ideas and methods of community engagement and volunteerism. It was fascinating for us to hear about civic engagement in their respective countries and were delighted to find out there is an organization called The Haven in Eastern Uganda which also concentrates on poverty reduction.

The Haven Through 40 Years
The Haven will commemorate its four decades of service to the region by releasing 40 stories of people, events, ideas, and services fundamental to our mission. We will be releasing these stories weekly, so check back often.
