Even though school is out until late August, children who participate in the Haven’s Afterschool Program can enjoy many group activities throughout the summer. Some days during the week children “hang out” at Bev’s House, site of the school year program, to read, play games and stay connected to their adult mentors. Food is always a part of the activity!
Field trips and community activities also liven some of the long summer days. Six students participated in a week-long therapeutic horseback riding program at DJ Jesser’s Moonrise Farm in Taftsville, VT. The kids learned basic riding skills, grooming and even some tricks! A larger group went to the Ben and Jerry’s factory for a tour and some ice cream. Children have experienced the Echo Museum in Burlington, the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, the Montshire Museum, the Hartford pool, rock climbing at Green Mountain Climbing Center, and pet care at the Humane Society in Windsor, VT.
Still to come this summer: canoeing, hiking, attending the One Direction concert and more!
The Haven Through 40 Years
The Haven will commemorate its four decades of service to the region by releasing 40 stories of people, events, ideas, and services fundamental to our mission. We will be releasing these stories weekly, so check back often.
