In September, the Upper Valley Haven will join forces with Feeding America, food banks, and community food pantries across the country during Hunger Action Month to raise awareness about the national hunger crisis. Hunger is a grim reality for 48 million Americans, some of whom are our Upper Valley neighbors struggling to feed their families and themselves. One in four Vermonters is food insecure, including 33,900 children and 26,010 seniors. In New Hampshire, approximately 13% of children are living in food insecure environments.
You can help support the national campaign on a local level by donating food, organizing a food drive with friends or colleagues, or making a monetary donation to help the Haven purchase food. Even after distributing donated food, the Haven must purchase an additional $373,000 in basic items to make sure no family is turned away.
A generous friend of the Haven will match monetary donations specifically directed to the Food Shelf and made during September 2017. Your dollar will double in value to us and we will be able to purchase food at lower costs than is available to you independently, stretching your donation even further.
We’ll have other fun ways to get involved—including a special transformation to the outside our building—keep an eye on our Facebook page all month long in September!
