As a young boy of just 5 years, Rafael came to the Haven with his mother to seek shelter. They stayed in what was then the Haven farmhouse until they were able to get an apartment of their own. Since their departure they have remained a part of the Haven fabric. Pura, Rafael’s mother, has been a part-time member of the Haven staff, assisting with facilities at Byrne House as well as providing transportation to shelter guests. Rafael participated in the After School Program until he graduated from Hartford High School in 2009 and went on to attend Castleton State College. It is with great pride that Jodi Turner and Sara Kobylenski attended his graduation ceremony from Castleton on May 18th where Rafael received his Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences. May 18th not only represented his perseverance and success but also distinguished Rafael as the first member of his family to get his Bachelor’s Degree. Congratulations Rafael, the Haven is very proud of your accomplishments and looks forward to hearing about your new path in life!
