When Joanna came to the Haven in need of clothes for work, we gave her a clothing voucher to use at the Listen Store. During the same visit, her service coordinator Tara noticed that she was wearing a flip flop that made her out of balance with the orthopedic boot she wore on her right leg. When Tara asked her about shoes, Joanna said that she couldn’t afford them. What happened next turned out to be what we refer to as a “Haven Magic” moment. Tara had recently put aside a nearly new pair of New Balance shoes for just this type of situation. And voila! The shoes, size 11, fit perfectly and Joanna walked out through our doors with a renewed sense of balance.
The Haven will commemorate its four decades of service to the region by releasing 40 stories of people, events, ideas, and services fundamental to our mission. We will be releasing these stories weekly, so check back often.
