“You can’t recognize the face of hunger by just looking at someone. Never assume you can tell by looking at someone whether they might need a trip to the food shelf to be sure they can feed themselves or their families. The people who use the Haven food shelf look just like you and me.” Lori Wick, Food Shelf Coordinator
In 2016, the Haven’s Food Shelf served 3855 households; 736 of them were households coming for the first time ever.
Keeping the Food Shelf stocked so that any family or individual who needs to access it can bring food to their table is an on-going, critically important part of the Haven’s mission. We are grateful for the donations to the Food Shelf that come in from individuals and businesses all year round.
Recently, two businesses stepped up to help us fill the shelves when they were critically low. Great Eastern Radio and the Hannaford in West Lebanon teamed up with us to “stuff the Haven truck” on February 23rd. The result of this joint effort was impressive. We collected:
- 1,418 pounds of food
- 226 jars of peanut butter (1/2 of which Hannaford donated as a match)
- 273 cans of tuna
- 91 boxes of pasta
- Plus lots of other items
- Our total in cash donations was $1,815, which included a $500 gift card from Hannaford.
Thanks to Great Eastern and Hannaford for your leadership, and to the many community members who participated!
